What is sperm freezing (cryopreservation)?
Sperm freezing consists of cryopreserving a semen sample to preserve male fertility so it can be used in the future for an assisted reproduction treatment.
The semen sample undergoes a vitrification process at −196 °C in liquid nitrogen vapour with a cryoprotective medium and with progressive temperature control.
Depending on semen quality, the biologists will inform you about the chances of using the sample in the future and may recommend freezing more than one sample.
When is sperm freezing recommended?
Sperm freezing is indicated in the following cases:
- When the male partner is about to undergo chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
- When there is a progressive decline in semen quality.
- When the semen sample is of low quality and the sperm count is low.
- If there is difficulty obtaining a semen sample for the assisted reproduction treatment. This way, we make sure a sperm sample is available on the day of the egg retrieval (pick-up).
- When the male partner cannot attend the clinic to provide a sample on the day of the egg retrieval due to work or personal reasons.
