What is egg freezing?
Egg freezing (vitrification) is a fertility preservation treatment designed to preserve your fertility. It allows you to postpone motherhood without losing egg quality by extracting and ultra-rapidly freezing your eggs for future use.
Buy yourself time and options without giving up your life plan. At Love Fertility we freeze your eggs using vitrification (an ultra-rapid technique) and support you at every step. We don’t promise the impossible — we plan honestly, together with you.
Who is egg freezing (vitrification) for?
If now is not the right time but you know you want to become a mother — with a partner or on your own — this option lets you preserve the potential of today’s eggs for tomorrow.
- If you have been diagnosed with endometriosis, a genetic or autoimmune condition that may affect egg quantity or quality.
- If you need to undergo ovarian surgery.
- If you are about to receive chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
- If your markers (AMH / AFC – Antral Follicle Count) indicate low ovarian reserve.
- If motherhood is not right for you at this stage for professional or personal reasons.
Signs it may be time to act now
- You realise that every year counts when it comes to egg quality.
- You want peace of mind: “If I can conceive naturally, great — and if not, I’ll have more chances of having my baby.”
- You would like to align your personal, professional, and emotional calendar without closing doors or feeling pressured.
Ideal age
The sooner, the better. Between 30 and 35 we usually obtain a good number of quality eggs, provided there are no pre-existing conditions such as endometriosis. In those cases, we recommend starting periodic fertility tests from the moment of diagnosis so we can monitor your reproductive health closely. As a reference, many patients around 33 choose to freeze eggs to gain real options today while keeping the dream of motherhood alive for tomorrow.
What the treatment includes at Love Fertility
- Initial consultation with medical history review, guidance, and Q&A.
- Transvaginal ultrasound scan.
- Ovarian stimulation with prescribed fertility medication and ultrasound/hormonal monitoring.
- Ultrasound-guided egg retrieval (pick-up) (15–20 minutes, under sedation) as a day-case procedure.
- Vitrification of mature eggs and storage for 1 or 5 years included.
- Cycle report and post-procedure review consultation (not a phone call). Emotional support with a specialist psychologist throughout the process.
Note: Stimulation medication is not included by law and must be purchased at a pharmacy. Annual storage beyond the period included in your treatment quote is charged separately. After your free first consultation we will provide a clear, fixed-price treatment quote.
The egg freezing process step by step
Think of egg freezing (vitrification) as the first part of an IVF cycle. Based on your blood tests and diagnostic results, your doctor will decide the best stimulation strategy for your case. With the prescribed hormonal protocol, we encourage multiple follicles to grow so we can collect a higher number of mature eggs in a single cycle.

1. First visit and ultrasound scan
We review your medical history and perform an ultrasound scan. We will ask you to have a set of blood tests (including AMH – Anti-Müllerian Hormone) and other diagnostic tests. We then discuss expectations and timelines in a results consultation (€120, deductible from the treatment cost).

2. Ovarian stimulation (10–12 days)
We use the same hormones your body produces naturally, but at higher, controlled doses so that more eggs mature at once. In a natural cycle, several follicles begin to develop but only one reaches ovulation (maturity); here we aim for more to grow.

3. Monitoring
We schedule 3–4 visits with ultrasound and hormonal checks to assess follicle growth and adjust doses. Once the follicles reach the right size, we instruct you to administer the ovulation trigger (GnRH agonist) to induce final egg maturation — approximately 36 hours before the egg retrieval (pick-up).

4. Egg retrieval (pick-up)
This is a day-case procedure performed in the operating room with an anaesthetist and the Love Fertility medical team, guided by ultrasound and under sedation. You go home the same day and will have a direct phone number to reach the team at any time, even outside clinic hours.

5. Vitrification in the laboratory
Our laboratory team evaluates the eggs, selects the mature ones, and vitrifies them — an ultra-rapid freezing technique at −196 °C that has revolutionised fertility preservation, achieving very high egg survival rates. This is very different from the old slow-freezing method, which offered few guarantees. The eggs are stored in liquid-nitrogen tanks inside the laboratory; they require no electrical supply and are completely safe.
How many eggs should you aim to freeze?
The recommended number depends on your age and your future family plans.
The table below shows the percentage of chromosomally normal embryos (euploid blastocysts) for each age range and how it decreases over time. Bear in mind that roughly 2–3 eggs are needed per blastocyst. This is why we recommend preserving fertility before the age of 35 — the point at which quality declines more rapidly. However, even for women aged 37–39, egg freezing may still be worthwhile if starting a pregnancy sooner is not an option:
| Age | <30 | 30-40 | 35-37 | 38-39 | 40-41 | 42 | 43 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| % euploid blastocysts (chromosomally normal) | 70% | 60% | 50% | 30% | 25% | 20% | 10% |
Results and expectations
Vitrifying your eggs does not guarantee a pregnancy; it preserves potential.
- Egg survival after warming: in our experience with women under 35, survival rates are very high (97–98 %); this means that most of your vitrified eggs “wake up” well.
- Future probability of pregnancy: it depends above all on your age at vitrification and on the total number of eggs available when we proceed with IVF/ICSI (as well as sperm quality and uterine factors).
The practical takeaway: vitrifying now means preserving the best of today for tomorrow. Whether you have a partner or not, you will have real options to become a mother with your own eggs.
Safety, pain, and recovery after egg retrieval
Because the egg retrieval (pick-up) is performed under (light) sedation, most patients find it very manageable. Afterwards, it is normal to feel period-like discomfort for 24–48 hours.
Pre-retrieval checklist
- Stay hydrated, rest well, and avoid alcohol in the days before.
- IMPORTANT! Administer the ovulation trigger medication at the exact time indicated by your doctor. If this is not followed, you may ovulate early and the eggs could be lost before collection.
- Plan your diary: rest on the day itself and relative rest for 24–48 hours.
Post-retrieval checklist
- Take the prescribed painkiller if you need it.
- Relative rest for the first 24–48 hours. No sport, heavy lifting, or physical strain.
- Stay well hydrated — drink 1.5–2 litres of water or fluids per day.
- Avoid heavy or fatty meals.
- Avoid sexual intercourse — we recommend waiting until your next period.
- Avoid sport until the discomfort has gone; start again with gentle exercise.
- Call us if you experience pain that does not ease, progressive abdominal distension, fever, dizziness, heavy bleeding, or difficulty breathing.
If in doubt or if anything concerns you, contact us by phone, WhatsApp, email, or our out-of-hours number. Always consult your specialist.
Uncommon risks
With current protocols, ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is very rare. Even so, we monitor you closely and, at the first warning sign, we will take the necessary precautions — including cancelling the cycle if needed.

Frequently asked questions about egg freezing
The sooner, the better. Between 30 and 35 we usually obtain a good number of quality eggs, provided there are no pre-existing gynaecological conditions. We recommend periodic fertility tests from the age of 28 onwards — a simple AMH – Anti-Müllerian Hormone blood test together with an AFC – Antral Follicle Count and your age can give you a clear picture of your reproductive health so you can make informed decisions.
It depends on your age, estimated egg quality, and your reproductive wishes. Your doctor will recommend the number of eggs that should ideally be vitrified in order to maximise your chances of becoming a mother in the future.
Vitrification is ultra-rapid: the cryotops containing the eggs are plunged directly into liquid nitrogen at −196 °C, which prevents the formation of ice crystals that can damage the egg. At Love Fertility, egg survival with this technique is 98%.
Indefinitely. Once vitrified, eggs do not deteriorate over time — they remain at exactly the same quality as the moment they were frozen.
For storage renewal we will contact you when the chosen period is due, and by law the consent form is updated every two years.
If you have already become a mother naturally or simply decide not to continue storage, Spanish assisted-reproduction law provides three additional options for your vitrified eggs: donation for research, donation for reproductive purposes to other patients, or destruction. We will explain all the details and legal aspects during your informational consultation.
In general, yes — with light activity.
The process is straightforward. After warming, your eggs are fertilised in the laboratory with sperm from your partner or an anonymous donor (IVF/ICSI). The embryos are cultured to day 5–6 (blastocyst stage), we prepare your endometrium, and we transfer one blastocyst to achieve pregnancy. Any remaining blastocysts can be vitrified again for future attempts if the first transfer is unsuccessful, or for subsequent pregnancies.
Stimulation medication and annual storage beyond the agreed period. We will contact you when the chosen period is due or from the sixth year after vitrification.
